when birds drive

I walked to my car after a meeting today to find a small little bird standing on my windshield wiper. It was so small and so sweet still with downy feathers of a baby chick. He didn't fly away as I approached and turned to check me out as I got into my car. I thought he would fly any minute or at least when he felt the jolt of putting my car into gear. No go. He was in it for the ride. Perhaps he had fallen or floated from the tree above trying out his new wings.

I pulled forward out of my parking space a little and he stayed put. I backed back into the space. If this little guy fell off and I or a vehicle behind me ran him over, I'd be crushed. I got out of my car and walked around to the other side where he stood balancing. I thought this act would surely scare him. No dice. Now I'm sure there is a movie about 'when birds attack' and I wasn't about to take the chances of this cute little guy pecking out my eyeballs. That didn't stop me from talking to him though, coaxing him to fly away and informing him I was about to leave and maybe he should too. Back to reality I was thankful no one was walking by in that moment listening to me talk to this little creature.

Maybe he'd hold on? I had to drive half a mile to the post office directly down the street. I maintained ten miles per hour the whole way with luckily no lunch time drivers heading in my direction. Small towns are great this way. He held on tight the wind blowing in his face, his little head turning to his side and up to watch trees and flowers go by. It was like flying but without the work.

I had a flash that I was starting some bad bird behaviors where they stop flying and start riding on cars to get where they need to go. I also started to wonder if being so little he'd be able to find his way back to his nest and a parent. I decided that if he made it all the way to the post office with me, I'd drive him back and try to coax him a little harder. It was then I stopped at a light. He shat on my windshield and mustered up the courage to fly away. He hopped to the hood and fluttered a little and I actually think he fell off my car. I was motionless. What if he fell under my car and my tires might squoosh him?! It was a green light and still no vehicles behind me. I quickly glanced down through my passenger window to see a little bird chirping loudly on the side walk. Surely that's him?

I rolled slowly forward eyeing my side mirror scanning for a little corpse cringing in anticipation of a little snap crackle sound of a tiny bird. None. He was safe. For now.

i can't get to sleep

I think about the implications.. of hugging Colin Hay so tight! Yeah, I know it's blurry but it's HIM! Great concert playing mostly from his Going Somewhere CD and a little from his new one, Are You Lookin' At Me? Men at work rock.. and Colin sounds better than with the boys I think. He's hilarious too. If you ever get a chance, go see him.

making the donuts

I found myself in the kitchen tonight wanting a snack and luckily didn't buy enough at the grocery store to satisfy my constant cravings. It was then I wished I had some yogurt to eat. So, I made some :~)

After getting the milk above 53 deg C but below 75 C, remove from heat, slowly add unsweetened unflavored yogurt stirring and mushing out the clumps with a wooden spoon, then put it to bed wrapped snugly in a thick blanket and perhaps a leather jacket for safe measure where it can sit undisturbed for ~10 hours.

bunnies

This little guy visits my yard every day. I love bunnies.. can you see him?
